Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala's Prison Testimony: Inside the Ad Hoc Committee Hearings (2025)

A controversial figure, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, is set to make waves as he meets with the Ad Hoc Committee of Parliament. Despite his high-profile status and the sensitive nature of the allegations, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has assured that Matlala will continue to enjoy his privileges, including his meals, during this process.

The Cat's Cream: A Tale of Justice and Privilege

In a recent development, IOL reported that Members of Parliament (MPs) are heading to the Kgoši Mampuru facility to gather testimony from Matlala, a remand detainee and alleged tenderpreneur. This appearance is part of a larger investigation into claims made by KwaZulu-Natal's police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, regarding criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference within the criminal justice system.

The Ad Hoc Committee, established to delve into these serious allegations, is scheduled to hear from three key witnesses in Gauteng this week. The hearings will take place within the confines of the prison itself, a decision made by the committee to ensure the safety and security of all involved.

Singabakho Nxumalo, the national spokesperson for Correctional Services, emphasized the meticulous planning that has gone into these proceedings. "Our primary focus is on maintaining secure facilities and rehabilitating inmates in humane conditions. We take great pride in our incident-free track record during such events. Our planning is so thorough that disruptions due to poor organization are simply not an option," Nxumalo stated in an interview with Newzroom Afrika.

Nxumalo further highlighted the committee's comfort and potential desire to extend their stay due to the meticulous arrangements. He confirmed that MPs will be present at the facility until Friday and that limited public access has been granted for those wishing to attend the hearings.

"Matlala's safety is our utmost priority. When it's time for his appearance before the Ad Hoc Committee, he will be escorted from his cell directly to the venue. The route and details of his movements, including what he consumes during breaks and in the hall, are confidential for security reasons," Nxumalo assured.

The spokesperson also addressed the dietary considerations for inmates, assuring that Matlala's meals will be carefully managed. "He will receive his breakfast, lunch, and dinner as usual. The only adjustment is the timing of these meals. We have strict protocols in place to ensure that his dietary needs are met without any room for misuse."

Nxumalo emphasized that safety protocols extend to every aspect, including the handling of Matlala's meals.

Matlala's alleged involvement in fraudulent transactions related to the Tembisa Hospital 'looting' scandal and his arrest for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, actress Tebogo Thobejane, have brought him into the public eye. He is also believed to be a key player in the manipulation of SAPS tenders to benefit criminal syndicates allegedly protected by senior political and police officials.

In a significant development, SAPS awarded a major security services tender to Medicare24, a company linked to Matlala, in June 2024.

In addition to Matlala, the committee has decided to hear from the SAPS' chief financial officer and the deputy national commissioner for policing, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane. The testimony of Lieutenant General Mosikili and Dimpane will resume on Tuesday, 25 November 2025.

This story raises questions about the balance between justice and privilege within the criminal justice system. While Matlala's access to certain comforts may seem controversial, the DCS's commitment to maintaining order and security during these proceedings is commendable. It remains to be seen how this high-profile case will unfold and what impact it will have on the ongoing investigation.

What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you believe that providing certain privileges to inmates during such hearings is necessary or does it send the wrong message? Share your opinions in the comments below and let's spark a discussion on this intriguing aspect of our justice system.
