Team USA's bullpen gets a boost with Speier and Jax additions
Team USA's starting rotation has been a force to be reckoned with, but what about the bullpen? The recent additions of left-hander Gabe Speier and right-hander Griffin Jax are sure to strengthen the team's relief corps.
Gabe Speier, a dominant left-handed pitcher, is no longer just a LOOGY option. His impressive performance against both left- and right-handed batters is a testament to his versatility. Speier held lefties to a mere .179/.214/.302 slash line with a remarkable 42/2 K/BB rate, and righties didn't fare much better, slashing just .203/.267/.347. His ability to dominate batters from both sides of the plate is a valuable asset for any team.
Griffin Jax, traded midseason to the Rays from the Twins, made an immediate impact with a 3.60 ERA in 23 games, striking out 27 batters in 20 innings. In 2024 with Minnesota, Jax showcased his talent with a sterling 2.03 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 71 innings. His ability to handle high-pressure situations and his consistency make him a valuable addition to the bullpen.
With the World Baseball Classic's pitch counts, the mixing and matching between relievers and starters will be more dynamic than usual. However, dominant relief arms that can handle batters from both sides of the plate become even more crucial. The recent additions of Speier and Jax to Team USA's bullpen are a strategic move that will undoubtedly strengthen the team's overall performance.
