MotoGP 2027: VR46's Future Plans & Rider Lineup | Exclusive Interview (2026)

Change is on the Horizon for MotoGP in 2027! With the upcoming season, MotoGP is gearing up for some significant transformations, introducing 850cc engines and prohibiting ride-height devices, alongside Pirelli stepping in as the exclusive tyre supplier, replacing Michelin.

However, the real intrigue lies in the rider market, which appears poised for a substantial overhaul. So far, only three riders have confirmed contracts extending beyond this year, creating an air of uncertainty for teams and fans alike.

Among the teams navigating these changes is VR46, which currently finds both of its riders—Fabio di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli—without contracts following the conclusion of this season. In a recent conversation with Crash.net, team principal Pablo Nieto acknowledged the pressing decisions that lie ahead for the squad. "Absolutely. We’ve already begun discussions; it seems to come around earlier each year. I can understand the urgency, especially given that by 2027, around 90% of the riders will be available for contracts.

"The period from 2025 to 2026 might be somewhat dull, but the transition from 2026 to 2027 promises to bring significant shifts in MotoGP. Therefore, we must be prepared for anything that comes our way."

Last season, VR46 engaged in preliminary discussions with rising star Pedro Acosta, who ultimately decided to remain with KTM for an additional year. Nieto did not close the door on Acosta’s potential future with VR46, expressing that it would be "a dream" to have him join the team. Nevertheless, he emphasized that their immediate focus is on ensuring that their current riders have the opportunity to secure their positions on the track.

"We aim to retain our existing riders, as we want to provide them the chance to achieve great results," Nieto stated. "However, the unpredictable nature of the sport means we must always strive to assemble the best lineup possible. Our focus remains steadfast on that goal."

Di Giannantonio competes with factory-spec equipment directly under Ducati's contract, while his teammate Morbidelli is contracted through VR46. In the 2025 MotoGP standings, di Giannantonio finished sixth, with Morbidelli closely behind in seventh, collectively achieving an impressive total of 13 top-three finishes throughout the season.

On an exciting note, Ducati’s factory-supported satellite team is set to reveal its new race livery for 2026 in a special event in Rome on Wednesday.
