Robbie, in an interview, revealed that she became 'codependent' on Elordi, who was just 28 years old at the time. She described her initial attraction to him, saying, 'I remember the first couple of days on set, he would just be like, always in the vicinity of where I was, but in a corner watching. On the third day, I found myself starting to look around to see where he was.'
Elordi, who played the role of Heathcliff, felt a 'mutual obsession' with Robbie. He explained, 'Regardless of plot or screenplay, if you have the opportunity to share a film set with Margot Robbie, you’re going to make sure you’re within five to 10 all the time. Watching how she drinks tea, how she eats her food.'
The pair's chemistry was so strong that Fennell, the director, wanted to ensure they had a strong connection. She created shrines of the stars in each of their dressing rooms, which Robbie described as 'so unhinged and so hilarious.'
However, their chemistry wasn't just a result of the film's plot. Elordi admitted that he had been a fan of Robbie's work since seeing her in the Australian soap opera 'Neighbours.' He even had a hit list of every working Australian actor on his wall to find their agents and see what they had been in. It wasn't until he saw Robbie in 'The Wolf of Wall Street' that he knew she was 'a global phenomenon.'
The pair's connection was so strong that Robbie created and gifted Elordi a matching, custom ring. The ring, designed by CeCe Jewellery, features two hand-enamelled skulls, stuck in an embrace and surrounded by thorns, symbolizing both bittersweet love and the harshness of nature. The ring also has an inscription of one of Brontë's most famous lines from the book, 'Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.'
Despite the strong chemistry, the pair have kept their relationship professional. They have both moved on to other projects, with Robbie starring in 'Barbie' and Elordi in 'Euphoria.' However, their chemistry on 'Wuthering Heights' will always be remembered as a testament to the power of on-screen romance.
