The Global Fight Against TB: A Call to Action
Despite our best efforts, tuberculosis (TB) continues to be the world's deadliest infectious disease, claiming millions of lives annually. The latest WHO report paints a concerning picture, revealing that we are falling behind in our quest to meet the End TB and Sustainable Development Goals. In 2024 alone, an estimated 10.7 million people were diagnosed with TB, and sadly, 1.23 million lost their lives, including 160,000 individuals living with HIV. These numbers are a stark reminder of the urgent need for action.
But here's where it gets controversial: the progress we've made since 2015 falls short of our targets. Global incidence has decreased by only 12%, and mortality by 29%, which is significantly lower than the 2025 goals of 50% and 75%, respectively. The gap between our aspirations and reality is widening, and it's time to address this head-on.
A recent comment published in The Lancet proposes a paradigm shift. It suggests that ending TB requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond biomedical solutions. We need structural, operational, and social innovations to tackle this complex issue effectively. This comment is a call to action, urging us to rethink our strategies and embrace a more holistic approach.
