But here's where it gets controversial... Gang of Dragon bears an uncanny resemblance to the beloved Yakuza series. The trailer showcases a gripping scene set in the streets of Japan, where a suited man encounters a shady character wielding a knife. The story then unfolds in a small bar, where our protagonist faces off against a group of Yakuza, demanding payment. A cryptic phone call ensues, followed by an intense fistfight, which our hero wins effortlessly, even against armed opponents. As he exits the bar unscathed, the iconic sign of Kabukichō, the real-life inspiration for Kamurocho in the Yakuza series, comes into view.
The logo, Gang of Dragon, flashes on screen, with a clever twist - the first letters of each word spell out GOD. However, the release date and platforms remain a mystery for now.
This marks the debut game from Nagoshi Studio, founded by Toshihiro Nagoshi in 2022 under NetEase, following his departure from Ryu Ga Gotoku in 2021. It's this very reason that leads us to believe that Gang of Dragon, despite its striking similarities to Yakuza, is not a part of that beloved franchise. Toshihiro Nagoshi, the mastermind behind the Yakuza series, is now embarking on a new journey, and we can't wait to see how he navigates the challenge of creating something fresh and unique after such a legendary legacy.
