This transformer malfunction led to a power surge that impacted PG&E’s equipment, ultimately causing the widespread outage.
The transformer in question is operated by Engie, a company dedicated to promoting the transition to a carbon-neutral economy, as noted on their official website. The close proximity of this transformer to the biomass plant contributed to the confusion surrounding the event, as Chief Cox explained. Importantly, he reassured the public that there was no fire at the Pacific Ultrapower facility and confirmed that all workers were safe and accounted for following the incident.
PG&E has verified that the explosion directly resulted in the power outage but indicated that their equipment sustained no major damage from the incident. Currently, the biomass plant is not operational, and Chief Cox stated that the timeline for its reopening remains uncertain. Furthermore, he mentioned that the exact cause of the transformer explosion is still under investigation.
