And this is the part most people miss: the government is also planning to ease restrictions on plug-in solar panels. These nifty devices can be installed on balconies, patios, or flat roofs and simply plugged into a power outlet—no specialist help required. It’s a game-changer for renters and homeowners alike. The Warm Homes Plan, due next month, is expected to include subsidies for households installing solar panels with battery storage, allowing them to save excess energy for later use.

Nigel Banks, technical director at Octopus Energy, claims that up to 1 million well-insulated homes could virtually eliminate their energy bills by adopting solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps.
“With flexible energy tariffs, homeowners now have the chance to pay virtually nothing for energy,” Banks said. “Even those who don’t reach zero bills will still save significantly, as the cost of repayment will be outweighed by the savings. The more people who benefit, the better.”
Earlier this month, the government announced it had approved an additional 4.5GW of solar and 4.7GW of offshore wind since taking office in July 2024. By 2030, this 9.2GW boost could power over 73 million Christmas trees and broadcast the King’s speech to more than 7.5 billion TVs—a staggering feat.
